Changing my URL erased my site

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi! So what happened was I was interested in changing my URL http://www.youngeducatedqueens.com to http://www.thefemfiles.com. Because I am not tech savy nor knowledgeable on wordpress I thought I could just go in on the dashboard and change the URL in the general settings. When I saved changes my entire site was gone and I was not able to sign in on my site nor see any of my content. The background of the site is still showing up on the old URL and the new URL says page not found. I am not sure how to move forward as this point with my site and would like some guidance.

    Thank you!

I am having the same issues. Needing an answer to the same question.

  • I believe you’re in the wrong forum. This forum is for questions related to WordPress.COM sites only.

Your site is a self-hosted WordPress(.ORG) site, for which you can find support here: http://wordpress.org/support/

For more details on the differences between WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG, check this page: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Note: changing the URL takes a bit more than just changing it in your site settings. First thing you need to do is to set it back to what it was. This page should get you started: https://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_The_Site_URL

I just went to wordpress.org and it says I do not have any email registered to an account for wordpress.org…plus if you look at my websites it says “.COM” so I would assume I am using wordpress.com because thats how I log in. I would like some help on how I can fix my URL because it will not let me go to either site since it redirects to the new URL that says “PAGE NOT FOUND”

  • Even though your websites end with .com, they are not hosted at WordPress.com. When a site is hosted somewhere else, and they use WordPress software, we call them self-hosted WordPress.org sites — even though they are not actually located at WordPress.org.

This forum is only for sites that are hosted at WordPress.com and has no connection with the WordPress.org forums. The username and password that you use here on the WP.com forum, can not be used on the WP.org forum — they are two completely separate entities.

To post your question on the WP.org forum, you need to sign up there for a new account.

But, the one thing you need to do first, is to set your URL to the original setting to fix your site, see https://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_The_Site_URL

Oh okay that makes perfect sense. Thank you for clarifying that for me. Also, my biggest issue is that I cannot change my site back and that’s why I’ve been stuck. I cannot login to even be able to reach my Settings > General because every time I try to login to get into my dashboard (Where I messed up in the first place) it redirects me to the new URL blocking it from letting me sign in.
