Changing my website domain name
-
I currently have a blog called brownieboxblog.wordpress.com, and I want to upgrade to a personal wodpress plan with a custom domain name (that’s completely different from browniebox). How would that affect all the link especially in social media that link back to my current .wordpress.com site? I want to make sure that changing my website name doesn’t break all the links I created over the years. Any help is greatly appreciated! :)
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

WordPress will automatically redirect new visitors but it may cause some problems with third-party services.
“New URLs: Adding a domain will change the URL (the links) to all your posts and pages. We will automatically redirect any visitors, but note that third-party services such as Twitter rely on the URL to measure activity. This may cause existing retweet counts to be reset to 0. Future posts will not be affected.”
I hope this answer your questions. You should be good to go if your biggest concern is just broken links.

I did some additional research and found that you may have to purchase the site redirect.

Hi there,
If you register a domain with us you won’t need the site redirect. The Redirect upgrade is to direct traffic from your WordPress.com site to a completely different site.
If you register/map a domain to your WordPress.com site, we automatically redirect the free address to the paid one.
So, anyone clicking on your http://brownieboxblog.wordpress.com/ address will still get taken to your site, at the new domain. It doesn’t matter where they click the link – both the WordPress.com link and the custom domain will take people to your site.
All that will be affected is that the sharing counts for Facebook, Tumblr, etc, will be reset, and you’ll see a temporary drop in traffic from search engines as they will need to re-index your site at the new domain.
