changing name of blog
-
Hi, I registered my domain for $18, but now want to change the name slightly. Can I do this, or do I have to make a whole new blog?
I also have listed with this same name, and some old ones listed that I won’t be using. Can I delete them? Thank you for any help.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The top level domain here is wordpress.com
All blogs hosted here are on .wordpress.com sub-domains like http://scienceandmyspecialneedsdog.wordpress.com/If we wish to we can purchase a custom domain http://___________ and remove the .wordpress.com. That is what we do when we purchase a domain mapping upgrade for $18 each year.
What is the domain URL starting with http:// that you want to purchase and map to from your underlying .wordpress.com blog URL at http://scienceandmyspecialneedsdog.wordpress.com/

I guess I am not very ‘literate’ in the area of domains,, urls .. etc… so let me just tell you what I did … I created a blog on wordpress. I paid to have it registered to be used without the wordpress addresss……. I have not written anything on it yet.. I am still at the “setting up stage”… but I now want the title to be different.. and don’t know if I can do that…..

Yes I got that. What is the domain URL starting with http:// that you want to purchase and map to from your underlying .wordpress.com blog URL at http://scienceandmyspecialneedsdog.wordpress.com/

IMPORTANT NOTE: Doing what follows does not change the URL (blog address).
The Site title (blog name) and/or the optional Tagline can be changed on the top of this page at any time. > Settings > General …
“save changes”. That is exactly where search engine spiders look for the site title and removing it from there can cause issues with getting your content indexed. Note that the site title (blog name) and blog address URL do not have to be the same but it’s better for SEO (search engine optimization) if they are the same. -
do you mean the new name I want to call it… I guess what I am asking .. http://lifescienceaspecialneedsdog.com. Of course the title has commas. It is kind of long I know but I don’t want to be too dog limited.
-
okay,, so now I understand what I though.. the url address will not change. I think maybe I should just start over, cause this is all sounding complicated. Can I just “erase” everything I have on wordpress so far and start over. I was playing with making names, but it kept them, and now I have 6 listed and it gets confusing… can’t I make just one?
-
YES! http://lifescienceaspecialneedsdog.com. is the domain URL I was asking for.
In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from and the domain name you desire must be available for purchase, or you must already own the domain URL.
You must be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard at > Store > My Upgrades to purchase a domain name by purchasing an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog.
See here if you do not own a domain http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/
After you do the primary blog set up it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

I think I will just have to make a new url and pay another $18.00 then.. right? I wish there was a class on this… I just write in word…. but am trying to get a place to put it! I am not trying to sell anything or be a professional…. but I think the first name was a little to limiting……

Do not play with registering .wordpress.com blog addresses ie. URLs. Deleted blog URLs are not recycled, regardless of who registered and deleted them and no exceptions are made.

No. Do nothing at all please. I’ll tag this thread for a Staff follow-up. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

thank you for your patience….
yes, I do have that one registered…..
when I open my wordpress blog account page, I have about 6 listed.. but I only want one……can I delete ones I am not using or do they just stay there and I ignore them?? -
re: your playing comment… I guess I learned that too late.. I mean, I guess I thought when I was setting up a blog to see what it looked like,,, it wasn’t going to be kept :(
Ok then, I will do nothing… I guess that way I cannot make more of a mess. Thank you very much for your help.

Deleting blog URLs means they cannot be used by you or by anyone else period. To delete a free hosted WordPress.COM blog you must be logged in under the exact same username account that registered the blog. To prevent accidental or inadvertent deletion of blogs, there are multiple warnings given that blog deletion is permanent and irreversible. Lastly, a verification link is sent in an email and must be clicked to delete a blog. If clicking that link does not work then copy and paste it into your upper browser window and click.

Deleted blog URLs are not recycled, regardless of who registered and deleted them and no exceptions are made.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/recycling-blog-names/Alternatively, to change blog visibility to private so you can use the unwanted blog for testing. http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/
Do nothing please. Just wait for Staff to help you.

Hi Ariana,
Right now, you own the custom domain name scienceandmyspecialneedsdog.com. There isn’t a way to change a domain name that you already own — registering a domain name gives you the right to use that exact name.
If you change your mind within the refund period, you’re welcome to cancel the domain name for a full refund. Then, you can purchase a new domain name to change it.
After the refund period, you won’t get a refund but you’re welcome to register a second domain name with the new name you’d like: Register a New Domain
You can own as many domains as you want and have them all link to the same site, if you’d like. Please let me know if I can do anything more to help with that. :)
