Changing page names in Pages widget
-
Hoping someone can help.
I am using the Pages widget in sidebar and using Dynamic Widgets on a new WP site I’m building. The pages listed in the side bar include the entire page title. I’m wondering if I can edit the page names in the pages widget without altering page names on the site.
For instance, the title of a page might be ‘The White Circle of Death – The History of the Snowball’. Perfect title, but I would like to have simply ‘The History of the Snowball’ display in the sidebar widget rather than a long-winded title that takes up 2-3 lines.
Is there any way to accomplish this? Or another widget perhaps that allows the features of dynamic widgets while allowing editing page names? (I’ve been searching).
Thanks!!

Hi, I don’t see a link to the site to which you’re trying to work with. Is it a site hosted on WordPress.com or are you using the open source WordPress.org software on a blog hosted elsewhere?
If that’s the case, this forum is not really equipped to handle the issues that can happen on a self-hosted blog. You may get a better response posting your questions on the forums for WordPress.org https://wordpress.org/support/
If you are hosted at WordPress.com, what’s the site address you’re having issues with?

Yes. If you’re referring to a WordPress.com website, use the custom menu widget to accomplish your goal. With a custom menu, changing the text that appears in a menu item (corresponding to a visible link) is as simple as editing the Navigation Label of the menu item you wish to modify.

@stothek – Thanks for your reply. I have a html site currently and am making the switch to WP. The site is currently in development and is hosted on Synthesis, so I can’t provide a link at this point.
@musicdoc1 – It’s sounds like I’m using the wrong widget! I’m still fairly new to WP, other than posting blog entries, so I appreciate the help! So, I can set up a custom menu with the ability to edit the link text, order of pages listed and title (which is exactly what I need)? If so, I can use Dynamic Widgets to decide which pages that menu will show on as well?
If so, this is great and just what I need. Thanks for your help! Both of you!

I’m not sure what you mean by “Dynamic Widgets.” I quick Google search of the term, together with WordPress, gave results which indicate that they are available as plugins for self-hosted WordPress.org websites. You can’t add plugins to WordPress.com sites. Are you referring to WordPress.org website? If so, then I’m afraid you’re in the wrong forum. There are separate forums for WordPress.org website issues, here: https://wordpress.org/support/.
