Changing Permalink settings

Dear WP Forum,
I’m a newbie at WordPress. I have worked out how to change the permalinks for each page of my site by changing the copy in the ‘Slug’ field for each page, but a friend has sent me the following advice: “Please also change your settings so it will be done automatically whenever you create a new post – http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks” … When I visited the Using Permalinks page, it stated I needed to visit the Settings > Permalink panel. I can’t find this location on my version of WordPress, as the options under settings are as follows: General | Writing | Reading | Discussion | Media | Privacy | Open ID | Text messaging | Sharing | Domains | Email post changes | Webhooks. I have two questions: 1. Is my friend’s advice compulsory (i.e. will her advice make a difference)?; and 2. If 1. is a vital part of improving the SEO ranking of my site, how do I find/download the Preference panel?

The codex is for those who have hired web hosts and are self hosting WordPress.ORG installs. WordPress.ORG and WordPress.COM run on different software and what you point to cannot be done on a free hosted WordPress.COM blog. For clarity please read this entry on the front page of the WordPress.com support documentation very carefully.

PS: I’m using free software via WordPress.com, not a download from WordPress.org. Also, I want to download a plug-in to my WordPress.com site … Is this possible? The plug-in is http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/all-in-one-seo-pack/. Can I upgrade to the WordPress.org software and transfer my WordPress.org website with no loss of copy?

http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.COM blogs and we cannot install individual plugins or any themes into them The themes found on the internet are for wordpress.ORG installs which run on different software.

On free hosted wordpress.COM blogs we can only use the themes which have been coded to run on this multi-user software and made available to us here. > Appearance > Themes and no others. We cannot edit either themes or templates on free hosted wordpress.COM blogs. > http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/editing-themes/
If you wish to have complete control over a blog, the ability to upload themes and plugins, and to edit themes and templates then your option is to hire a web host and get a free software install from WordPress.ORG and self host it.
