Changing Permalinks – why do Posts redirect, but Pages give 404?

I’ve searched around, but couldn’t find an answer to this. So either there’s a incredibly simple answer, or it’s a whole new question :)

When you change the permalink of a Post, but then visit the original URL, you are auto-redirected to the new URL. Quite handy.

But when you do the same with a Page, you get a 404. Or at least I do.
Which suggests the Permalink of a page should never be changed – unless you’re prepared to lose your Google pagerank of that page.

Can anyone explain why it’s different between the two? And is there a way to prevent a 404s on a Page, after changing the Permalink? Any info much appreciated.
