Changing post link

I have a “news” section on my blog that has posted news stories from different internet news sites. On the front page, I was able to have the link on the post titles point to the actual news story, instead of the permalink on my blog, by using custom values on the post. It was simple because the news section is separated from the rest and I just made it so the link was the custom value each time by editing it in the loop.

However, for pages like the archives, author pages, etc, I want to be able to check if the post is in a category, and then set the link for the title to either the_permalink(); for normal posts, or a custom value, for news posts. What’s the best way to do this?
