Changing Primary Domain names

  Is there a way to completely change the primary domain name and delete the current one? In the set up process it wasn’t clear what it would be used for/how permanent it would be and only now can I see it being used and it’s not the correct name I wanted! Seem to have several names required and now got into a more complicated pickle than anticipated! I view the FAQ type answers suggested but they didn’t provide the help I need. Any other info would be gratefully received. Otherwise, I imagine I have to delete this account and start up again in 30 days time when this email address can be used again.

  hi,

  If by “change the primary domain name ” you mean change grandadsgirl.wordpress.com to
  some_other_name.wordpress.com, you can change your site’s free WordPress.com address at
  My Site ->Domains

  Thank you – I didn’t mean that one, I keep clicking and only see reference to primary name but not sure how or why….I mean the “All about Elli” title I can’t get rid of. I want to delete that name and it seems stuck!

  Hi there,

  It sounds like you’re speaking of your site title. That has nothing to do with the primary domain of your site – the domain is what someone types in their browser to get to your site, and the primary domain is the domain that will show in the browser address bar once the site loads, if you have more than one domain connected to the site.

  The site title is the text that displays at the top of your site, and that is set at My Site ->Settings. That is the name under which search engines will index your site, but it is not an address, and you cannot type that into your browser to get taken to the site.

  Yes!! Thank you!! The day I set up, every time I clicked on things that looked like it would be the place to change that name, it allowed me to edit everything EXCEPT that ‘site name’. Wish I had taken a screenshot of wherever I was, because it kept coming up with something about primary wotsit and it didn’t really make sense – made it hard to search a solution! Thought it was odd that was the only thing apparently not editable…. solved and glad you knew what it actually was! Thank you again!

  It sounds like you were looking at My Site ->Domains – that’s the only place the primary domain option appears.
