Changing primary domain with external nameservers

If I have a domain registered with WordPress, which can’t be transferred yet, I know I can point it at external nameservers to manage the domain elsewhere. I have domains showing up in the list like this

    • mysite.com (Primary domain): uses external nameservers (e.g. ns1.example.com)
    • mysitecom.wordpress.com

Using the external nameservers, trying to use the WordPress mobile app with mysite.com is trying to use the (now not existing) WordPress.com site rather than trying to access the self-hosted external site. Is there some way to fix that? DNS has been properly resolving to the external site for ~24 hours prior to first attempting to use the mobile app.

Some random searching has suggested I need to change the primary domain. But what happens to the current primary if I do? The warning text says all domains get redirected, but I don’t want that; I want the current primary to stay where it is (using external nameservers) and stop forcing me to authenticate against a WordPress.com site that doesn’t actually exist anymore.

  • Did you add the Jetpack plugin to the new self hosted site and connect that to the same WordPress.com account as the one for your .wordpress.com site?

Do I have to? I don’t want to pay for JetPack and have already set up users on the self-hosted site.

  • If you want to use the mobile app, you do need to add the Jetpack plugin. However, you can use the free plan.

Jetpack doesn’t mean you have users here, but that you’ve linked your site to WordPress.com. I found this yesterday, which is helpful: https://jetpack.com/support/user-names/

This mentions how to connect self hosted sites to use the apps: https://apps.wordpress.com/support/

Ahh, thank you! I’ll take a look at that.

Though interestingly, from iOS I was able to add the self-hosted site to the mobile app without JetPack. But Android is stubbornly insisting I use the non-existent WordPress.com site (complete with the logo and branding previously applied to it). So do I really need JetPack? And why does the iOS app not need it but the Android app does?

  • Hmm, I’m not sure! I’ve always used Jetpack to connect to the apps. Maybe a hold out from older ways and they’ve since upgraded to not require it. Or I’m just going about it in dinosaur fashion.

Try logging out on the Android app, then login to connect using your site’s credentials, since they are often different from WordPress.com’s login?

The WordPress app on Android doesn’t have an account for me to log out of yet. But I installed JetPack and linked it, and now… no change. The Android app is still demanding I log in to the WordPress.com site that doesn’t exist anymore. The branding is different on the self-hosted site and the usernames/passwords are also different, and the app is showing me the old branding and saying the new logins are invalid. And if I log in with WordPress.com credentials, that works but says I have no sites; it offers to add a site, which starts this whole process over again and still doesn’t get the new site even after linking with JetPack.

But, on iOS, it’s all shiny and working perfectly (or at least, I hope it still is since installing JetPack).
