Changing Privacy Settings from Public to Private
-
Hi,
Apologies for asking this on the WP.com forum but…
I’m about to take over the admin of a wordpress.org site and the owners thought it was a private blog. However, when I googled it (I currently don’t have any access hence my asking the question here where I do have my own blog), I found it’s actually a public blog.
Presumably now the site’s been catalogued by the search engines, it will remain visible even if I change the setting to private?
Thanks for your time.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Support forums for WP.org blogs are over at WP.org, but in general you can switch things to Private but that does not remove things from search engines.

If you change the setting of a blog from private to public it will take 3 – 6 months for the indexed posts to Google to clear their caches. During that period of time those who click the links to indexed content in Google’s or the other search engines caches will experience a 404 (page not found) error message.

Thanks for the very prompt replies raincoaster and timethief :)
NB I asked this on the com site because I have access to this forum: I’ve yet to have my account set up for .org and this is dependent on my prospective employer doing so.

WordPress.ORG is the keeper of the software you will be using – their forum is not related to your blog at all other than to help you. You can get an account at WordPress.ORG anytime. The log-in will be separate and a different log-in than your other blog.
