Changing Profile

I am very new. I have one WordPress blog that I host. I have just set up another (and I need to do one more) and will have to change it to self hosted later. Have to get help there.
The second blog: I do not want the avatar showing at all. How? If I want to use a avatar (using a b&w impression), can I put it in the sidebar.
Does it matter which blog is listed as primary?
On the drop down menu by display name publicly as – the only thing showing is the username. It is listed 3 times and I can’t get it to change. I want it to be the nickname. How can I change it.

You can turn off avatars from displaying in the recent comments widget by going to Dashboard > Presentation > Widgets and selecting no avatars in “avatar size”. I don’t think you can stop your avatar from showing on other parts of your blog, though, without the CSS upgrade but you can upload a blank avatar; that might be the closest thing to what you want.

http://faq.wordpress.com/2007/10/18/about-the-custom-css-upgrade/As for the dropdown, what do you see when you go to Dashboard > Users > Your Profile? Is the nickname filled in as well as the names? If it is then all you should have to do is select the nickname from the dropdown. If that’s not working, which browser are you using? If you’re using Safari or Opera both have some problems with WP and might be stopping the updates from sticking; if you have another browser like Firefox, try it in that and see if it makes a difference. Hope that helps.

Thanks cjwriter. Appreciate your help. Sorry for being a little dense. Just trying to learn and there is so much all at once.
I am using Firebox. I am going back to Dashboard and check out my profile once again. I know nickname was entered but I am going to double check.
I have just been reading and perhaps I should just enter this on a separate account.
On my original blog, I know that I can’t change the username. But can I change all of the other things without messing up anything.
Although I have posted a little on here, I am really just trying to fine tune it first. Before I really start posting regularly.

Oh yes, if I change the other which is http://www.therapistwithbipolar.wordpress.com to self hosting, will I still be able to use my same title. Once I take out the wordpress in the address and it becomes just .com/blog will it be ok. When they say you can only register that blog once and not to delete it, are they talking just about using wordpress.com

If you mean making changes to your user information (username, etc), I wouldn’t worry about messing anything up; you should be able to undo it or just change it back again. If you mean messing up the layout of your blog, the only thing you have to be careful of is if you purchase the CSS upgrade; you can mess up the layout if you’re not sure what you’re doing, but anything else you should be able to undo without too many problems.
If your were to self-host your blog later as well, the title doesn’t have to change unless you want it to. Basically what you’d be doing is creating a completely new blog and just including all of your old posts in there. Everything else can be as different as you want; the name, title, theme, etc. So yes, everything in the FAQs just relates to WordPress.com blogs; .org works completely differently.
