changing register after domain has expired
-
I recently switched from WordPress.com to WordPress.org my web hosting is now through Dream Host. When my domain name registration expired with WordPress.com I planned to also switch my registration but now I’m being told I must renew with WordPress AND they are attempting to charge me an $80 fee.
1) I do not want to register my domain through WordPress now that I am independently hosting my website, how do I get my domain back?
2) If I can’t register my domain elsewhere, there’s no way I’m paying some bogus $80 fee, I want a coupon code, or some assistance removing the fee from my account.
The “Cancel Domain” help page does NOT fully answer my question.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

For more information on what your options are, please see this document. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domain-expiration/
NOTE: WordPress.com is not charging the redemption fee. The domain registrar is charging it and they can charge whatever the market will bear, which is why I always renew my domains before they expire.
I’ll tag this thread for Staff assistance. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

my frustration to begin with is that I’m not allowed to know WHO that domain registrar is and why I can’t deal with them directly

Hi dmpoetry,
If you wish to renew your domain litnivorous.com through WordPress.com, we must charge the $80 as we must submit that fee to our domain registrar partner. This is not a fee we impose ourselves, and we make no money on this fee.
I fully understand that you may not wish to pay the $80. If that’s the case, then you will need to allow the domain to run through the redemption process and be put up for auction, where other parties can choose to purchase it. If no one decides to do so, the domain will eventually be released to the public and will be available to register again. This process may take up to 80 days, and we are not notified if a domain is released, so I would recommend you check a whois search periodically to see if the domain is available: http://who.is/
If you decide you do wish to renew it, please let me know and I can assist you further.
