Changing site URL to my domain

Hi, so no matter what I try I can’t get wordpress to use my domain.

Wordpress has my site URL and wordpress URL as something like http://box2222.temp.domains/~example1. I’d like to have my actual domain http://example.com and can’t get it to work.

I’ve tried every step from this post https://wordpress.org/support/article/changing-the-site-url/ and have had no luck. I’ve even started the entire thing over again following a step by step guide and still the same problem.

If I change both or just the wordpress URL I can’t get back to the admin page, if I change just the site URL it still doesn’t change the URL, it remains the same but links on there now redirect to my domain http://example.com but all pages show as cannot be found.

For clarification my host is bluehost, using chrome, I clear my cache and have tried another browser. I’m not trying to set up a separate directory, I just want my domain to work and not the random default one wordpress is using.

I’m hoping i’m just missing something simple but for the life of me I can’t figure out what i’m doing wrong.

  • Hi there!

I’m afraid that your site is not hosted with WordPress.com. It is a site using the open-source WordPress software (from WordPress.org) but hosted Bluehost.

Because WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two entirely separate entities, we cannot access files or data for sites that are hosted elsewhere, so we can only assist with sites that are hosted on our servers. You can read more about the differences between WordPress.org software and WordPress.com here:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

You can look for help at the community forums here: https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

http://wordpress.org/support/ is also a great resource for sites using the open-source WordPress.org software.
