Changing sub-title size on "piano black" theme

  • Unknown's avatar

    I understand that the upgrade package allows for customization of the header and much more, but that option (for customizing the sub-title size) does not appear to be available for “piano black.”

    Is that correct or am I missing something?

    Thank you!

    Hello there! You will be able to use Custom Design in order adjust the size of that Tag Line font. However, you don’t have that upgrade for mounteverestoftheobvious.wordpress.com/. It is live on your site, fraudulent5.wordpress.com/, only.

    If you decide to add the upgrade, please let me know if you need assistance with the resizing of the fonts. Or, I can also transfer the Custom Upgrade package from fraudulent5 to mounteverestoftheobvious, if you so choose.

    Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks very much.

    Hi. Thank you very much for your reply! I don’t want to risk messing up anything on my other site (and I think I have did apply some custom stuff there), so I would need to upgrade the new one.

    But before I do–I don’t mean to doubt you or anything, but I’m just a little unclear as to why the font options didn’t show when I went into that area of custom design to see what would be available to me. I will get a screenshot momentarily to show you what I’m seeing. But you’re saying that for Piano Black, you have no doubt that the subtitle font size can be modified?

    If you want to do a little test drive before you upgrade, follow these steps:

    In your blog’s Dashboard, click Appearance → Customize.

    In the right-hand menu, click Custom Design.

    Then, in the information box that appears, click Try Now.

    You should see the Fonts option appear and you can play around with sizes and aesthetics. See if that gives you the flexibility you desire.

    If you would like to further adjust the size of the Tag Line, you can utilize Custom CSS to make some changes.

    Here is information about customizing CSS on your WordPress.com site:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/editing-css/

    We also have an excellent CSS forum for any questions you might have about coding:

    Please let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks much and happy blogging!

    I appreciate all your helpful instructions but I don’t see “Try now.”

    It looks to me like I would need to alter the CSS in order to modify the font size of the sub-title and body text. I am fine with upgrading to do that, but I my experience with CSS is limited (as in I was messing around with it several years ago)–but my concern right now is that I don’t want to screw anything up. So, why I appreciate the info you sent on the CSS forum (and I would love to look into all that stuff later)–at the moment I would be grateful just to certain of exactly what the site title change would be and how to change the paragraph to a specific point size as well. Sorry to be so hesitant about messing with this–normally I want to as much as I can, but right now I’ve got a documentary I am writing to finish up as well as the website content to go with it–so I’m a little nervous to go messing with something that is not a huge concern right now anyway.

    Thanks for your time and support, as always!

    If you don’t want to mess around with too much coding, if you’d like assistance in choosing a new theme, I’m happy to help find something that fits your needs.

    In the Piano Black theme, your Tag Line corresponds with the Body Text size. Even with CSS, the size is going to be the same. The bigger you make the body text, the tag line will increase to that size. You can adjust the Body Text size without CSS. You would do that in your Custom Design panel by clicking Fonts.

    With CSS, you can bump the size up even more if you’d like (we can help with some simple code), and add attributes like making the tag line bold.

    Let me know if you have any other questions. Cheers!

    Thanks again for all your great help!! And I greatly appreciate the offer to help in choosing another theme, but Piano Black is perfect for what I’m doing — and trust me, I combed through the entire set of theme options. ;o)

    So here’s what I’m thinking now — based on your input. Once I get some other things out of the way today, I will create a dummy blog with the Piano Black theme. And then what I would like to do is buy the upgrade package (if necessary) for that dummy site — so I can test out the look without worrying about messing anything up on my main site. And based on your earlier comment, it sounds like you could just transfer over an upgrade package — so if I get the package for the dummy site, I would take you up on that offer by having that upgrade transferred to the my actual site.

    I know that might sound extreme — and ordinarily I wouldn’t be so cautious, but at this time I just have too many things going on at once, so I’d just feel more comfortable with a test site. And besides, I can use the dummy site later for other testing if I want to (and at that point I would get the upgrade package for it as well).

    I will get back to.

    Thanks again!

    Rick, that sounds absolutely fine. Thanks much for giving me the heads up! Best of luck on your documentary project and site launch!

    Much appreciated — you’re very kind!! And I greatly appreciate your understanding!! :o)

    Hi,

    Hope you had a nice weekend. I set up a test site but I’m a bit puzzled as to why the “try now” or “preview for free” doesn’t do anything on this theme. Have you tried testing that with Piano Black to see what happens?

    I was going to go ahead and get the upgrade to try it out though — but one other question first. What will happen to the size of the menu titles if I increase the paragraph size? Since you mentioned that the tagline is tied to the text size, I wasn’t sure how the menu titles factor in there.

    Thanks!

    Rick

    Hi Rick!

    While some of the font sizes are interconnected, there are additional options to make more specific adjustments with CSS code revisions to your theme. This feature is available to you if you have the Custom Design upgrade. For font adjustments, we can assist you…and for more involved coding changes, you can take your questions to the CSS Forums.

    Keep an eye out. I’ve sent a separate note to your Administrative email address.

    Thanks very much!

    Hi, Robyn.

    Sounds perfect! Thank you for both of your follow-up emails today! I will get the upgrade this afternoon and start looking into that. Then I’ll get back to you with questions tonight.

    Thanks again for all your phenomenal support!!

    Rick, My pleasure! Best of luck :)

    Hi, Robyn.

    I did the upgrade on my formattestingsite and also changed the font-size, so that part I’ve got. But per your comment above: “your Tag Line corresponds with the Body Text size”– I don’t see any change in the tag line “The.Deal.Is.That.We.Connect.These.Dots.”

    I’d like to see if I could make that tag line a little bigger and maybe put it in bold.

    Please advise.

    Thanks again!

    Hello! I would like to check out the steps you’ve taken so far. Have you tried to click Appearance → Customize, then click Fonts in the right-hand menu, and make adjustments to the Face and Size of both your Heading and Body fonts? In order to change your body font size, you also have to adjust the face.

    The other option is to add some CSS code, if those options don’t suit you altogether. In the same manner you revised your CSS to change the body font size, you can paste the following into your CSS Revisions box:

    #site-description {
    font-size: 18px;
    font-weight: strong;
    }

    Of course, save those changes to publish them!

    Let me know how that goes! Take care.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi, Robyn. I think we have a winner!! :o) Your CSS did the trick–only I changed “strong” to “bolder” because the lighter color of the tag line just needed a little extra boost–and now it looks perfectly balanced against the title. :o)

    Oh, on the steps you mentioned–I started with that, but I really like the default font for the theme, so that’s why I went straight to the CSS. By the way, when looking at the list of fonts in the list–I can’t tell which is the font that is currently in use. Is there a way to find that out. Not that it matters right now because I’ve got what I want–but I’m just curious.

    Please go ahead and transfer my upgrade from formattestingsite to mounteverestoftheobvious. Sorry for the hassle on that–but like I said, at the time I was just too wrapped up in so many other things and felt more comfortable making changes in a test environment. Down the road I may buy another upgrade for the test site so that I can practice, but for now I just need the one.

    And yes, I’m much more relaxed now that we’re wrapping things up–and you played a big role in that because you kept me going in this direction in parallel. So it all worked out quite nicely.

    Many thanks again!!! :o)

  • Unknown's avatar

    Terrific! That makes me very happy to hear.

    Just a heads up, before I do the transfer: Make sure you have the CSS revisions copied and pasted someplace safe. When I transfer the Custom Design upgrade, the upgrade itself will be usable on mounteverestoftheobvious/, but coding changes and custom design adjustments will not transfer. Once you let me know you’ve done this, I can move the package over and you can paste those revisions into mounteverestoftheobvious. I don’t want you to lose any of your hard work.

    Very exciting that you’re on the precipice of your site launch!

    Looking forward to hearing from you and we’ll take the next step forward. Thanks!

    I really like your style, Robyn! There is an elegance in your thoroughness that is unique to you. :o) I have nothing but great things to say about all the excellent support I’ve seen out of wordpress. Your operation is a model for how it should be done.

    And yes, thank you for the reminder on the revisions. I had already pasted them Microsoft OneNote — but obviously I could have easily forgotten. OneNote is my one-stop shop for everything (my documentary, my research materials, my database stuff–I’m a SQL Server developer, and naturally–anything to do with WordPress is housed there as well. OneNote can work wonders for organizing everything under the sun and make it easy to find. Oh, and screenshots — OneNote does an automatic OCR on them, so they become searchable as well.

    Anyway, since you’ve been so helpful I thought I might add a few extra tidbits on something you might find useful on your end.

    Thanks again for all your help and great spirit to support one’s efforts in so many ways! :o)

  • Unknown's avatar

    Aw shucks :) That’s incredibly kind of you to say. Thank you.

    I’ve transferred the Custom Design upgrade to mounteverestoftheobvious.wordpress.com/. You’re go to go! Customize to your heart’s desire.

    Thanks for the heads up on OneNote. I don’t have experience with it. I’ll have to take a look.

    Again, best of luck with the documentary and your website. Wishing you great things ahead!
