Changing the background image
-
I have been trying to change the background image of my blog on a non-premium theme, but it keeps telling me it will save the imagine, but won’t show it to the public until I upgrade which will cost me $30 – I don’t understand why I have to pay if I’m not using a premium theme?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I don’t know, what is CSS? I have followed all instructions and a friend showed me how she did it and I’ve done it exactly the same, but hers works and mine doesn’t.

Well apparently it requires an upgrade since cmbrown357 received a message about it.
If he got that message it means he didn’t probably go through Appearence / Background which is free.
-
Most likely the message was just another one of those “suggestions” you get from the Powers That Be to encourage folks to purchase one upgrade or another.
At any rate, the OP now has a background image…

Geez this is so frustrating. As I first said, I tried to change the background (via the change appearance/background option) but got a message saying it would only change my picture (and show to the public) if I upgraded and paid $30. When I look at my blog it has my chosen picture (basil leaves) when I’m in the customize zone but if I’m not in the customize zone and when other ppl look at it, they see the generic background picture (glass of wine) that comes with the free theme.
Do you guys know how I can get in touch with WordPress support? Thanks.

My apologies: I didn’t realize the wine glass was the background image that comes with that theme.
I can change the background image in my test blog, no upgrade. I wonder if you are having a browser problem?
http://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/There is something odd, though:
It will “take” an image, but will blow up even a very small image to fill the entire background. And I cannot get it to “scroll.” It remains “fixed.”I’ll modlook this thread so staff will take a look.

@cmbrown357: What options did you select? The Position option has to be set to Left, and the Repeat option has to be set to No Repeat.

Hi there!
Are you going from your dashboard to Appearance -> Background to change your background? I you try to change it via the Customize menu, it might be confusing which option to use as you can set a custom background with the Custom Design upgrade. To be safe, just use the link from your dashboard and you shouldn’t have any trouble.
The maximum width for a full-page background is 1600px. Also, when you upload a new image, it will be shown very small in the window – it does that so you can see how the different alignment/tiling options will affect your page.
I hope that clarifies things! Let me know if you still have trouble.

Thank you everyone for your responses, after having another little play and following all of your advice, I have managed to get it to work! Courtney
