Changing the header image on my site

  uploaded a new image
  went to admin page
  selected appearance, then header, then add new image
  cropped the image and saved
  observed that image appeared on the left panel
  the header on the center panel was not changed
  deleted the image that was on the center panel
  still after save, there was no change in the site’s header image.
