changing the name of my blog

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello.
I’d like to change the name of my blog & am just wondering how that will affect my rankings. I use my blog for work & it often comes up higher on search engines than my website does which therefore also brings a good amount of traffic. If I change the name, what will the negative consequences be? Also, does it make a difference that the current name has the word “blog” in it but new name does not?
    Thanks!
    E

That’s my website, not my blog. My blog is http://gilblog.wordpress.com – So am I posting in the right forum?
    Thanks.

Yes this is the correct support forum for http://gilblog.wordpress.com/

Note that the site title and blog address URL do not have to be the same but it is better SEO (search engine optimization) if the are.

The Site title and/or the optional Tagline can be changed on the top of this page at any time. > Settings > General … “save changes”
That is exactly where search engine spiders look for the site title and removing it from there can cause issues with getting your content indexed.

The word “blog” is irrelevant. This is all semantics and site structure. A blog is a website. The higher position in the SERPs will be secured by the URL that generates the most content. So if your website is page based it will always be outranked by the blog content.

A blog is a post based website designed for interactive communication. As the posts are frequently updated and appear on the front page of the site it’s very attractive to search engines.

What most people call a website is merely a page based site that functions as a one way noticeboard. As the structure is page based and as pages are for static content that rarely changes, and as pages do not have RSS feeds it is not as attractive to search engines as a post based blog structured site is.

Any WordPress blog can be restructured from being post based to being page based – no upgrade required. For greater clarity read > http://en.support.wordpress.com/using-wordpress-to-create-a-website/ and http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2013/07/25/create-a-wordpress-website-step-by-step/

P.S. This is some unsolicited feedback from a visually challenged person. My advice it to replace the animated gif in your sidebar with a static image. It’s very distracting. Also IMHO it makes your professionally orientated blog at http://gilblog.wordpress.com/ look amateurish, which may in turn, turn off potential customers.
