Changing the Post layout

  Is it possible to change the layout of the posts on a WP blog page? Currently the posts appear as a very boring list one on top of the other. I’ve tried applying a grid to my blog posts container but it doesn’t work seems others having the same problem. I don’t want to use a plugin I’d rather hard code the CSS as a grid or flex box but neither options works.
