changing the size of the featured image for posts on home page

  I want to use photos on my feature image that are larger than the thumbnail sizes on the homepage, so right now they are getting cropped off on my home page where it shows all of my posts. Is there a way to change the size of the thumbnail for feature images on the home page. I have never done CSS before, but I do see the CSS Stylesheet Editor white box to add CSS. Nothing is in there yet. Can someone help me. I am so lost. Thanks
