Changing the Tagline for a Secondary Page

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello! I have various taglines on each of my pages. However, my ‘homepage’ tagline and my ‘news’ page tagline are connected and I cannot seem to update one without it updating the other. Please help!

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,

    On the Affinity theme, the tagline will display on the homepage, the blog page, and all archives pages (year, month, day, author, etc.). It doesn’t display on static pages or on single posts. Instead the titles of the pages and posts appear in the same location in those cases.

    To block the tagline in selected areas where it displays by design on this theme, if possible, would probably require CSS customization. Please add a “modlook” tag to the sidebar on the right side of this topic if you’d like to call for staff atention. When staff responds here you may ask them about the possibility of CSS customization to block the tagline selectively on the site.

    Hi, thank you so much! I’m wondering…

    Since my “news” page is technically a “blog” page, is there a way to convert it to a “static page” without deleting all the information that is on the current “blog” page?

    If not, are there any free themes that are similar that would allow a different tagline on my blog page from the homepage? Or, if I upgrade my account can I customize it on the Affinity theme?

  • Hi –

    Yes, you can turn the “news” page back in to a regular old page. To do that, you’ll need to decide which page your posts will publish on to.

    The posts need a designated page to be published on, but that page, does not necessarily have to be linked in your menu, it just has to exist.

    I’m happy to look at the CSS and see if we can edit the text for the tagline on the News page specifically. Do you already know what you’d like that say? There’s no need to rush in to buying an upgrade quite yet – lets see what we can work out first.

    Thank you so much, I really appreciate that. If it’s possible with the CSS to edit the text for the tagline on the News page specifically, I would like it to just read “News”.

    The “News” page is really the only page that I intend to post updates to, so I suppose it really is the designated page to publish on, but I can post simultaneously to the “News” page and also have a hidden “blog” page if it simply needs to exist, also.

    Let me know what you find out. And thanks again!

  • Alright, I’m back. We can make this happen with CSS. I’ll share the code here. I just need to know which page you want to actually change the tagline on. Either home or news. Thanks.

  • Ah, sorry. I forgot to refresh and I missed your reply.

    Hi again, that’s great news (for my news page)! lol I really appreciate that! Let me know if there’s anything I need to do on my end. You made my day!

  • Here’s the code to make this change.

    .blog .site-description a {
    display: none;
    }

    .blog .site-description::after {
    content: “News”;
    }

    Go to https://wordpress.com/pricing/ and add the premium plan to your account. Remember, this comes with a custom domain :) Go to My Sites -> Domains -> Add and register one.

    Once the plan is added. Click on My Sites -> Customizer -> CSS and add that code. Just copy + paste it from this thread, and save. You should see the changes immediately.

    I have added the premium plan. I also copied & pasted the code above. Unfortunately, it didn’t do exactly as we had hoped… lol It did remove the “homepage” tagline, but now there is no tagline at all on the “news” page. Let me know.

    And thanks again!

  • Ah, it looks like the the quotes in Liz’s code got converted to fancy quotes. Try this:

    .blog .site-description a {
    display: none;
    }

    .blog .site-description::after {
    content: "News";
    }

    If that still does not work, just erase the quotes around “News” and re-type them as straight quotes so they work.

    Success!!! Thank you all so much!!!! It looks beautiful. Have a great day, everyone!
