Changing the URL

I didn’t really think ahead too much when I started the Blog. I just started it. And now that I have a clear vision of what I want the blog to accomplish, I want to change the name and the URL. But I’m concerned that it will also break any links that other people have used to link to my blog. Can I keep the katiedaisy921.wordpress.com, but also change to a new URL name which doesn’t include wordpress in it?
So at the top of my Dashboard, it asks me if I want to be the master of my own domain for $18 per year. And I do, but not for katiedaisy921.com that it shows there.
Am I making sense? I apologize – I am new to all of this but trying to learn as fast as I can!

To insure there are no broken links, all you need to do is to purchase your own domain name via a doman mapping upgrade and map from the katiedaisy921.wordpress.com URL to the new domain URL.
