Hi there. Please make sure you are using one of the browsers and versions listed here: http://browsehappy.com/
Additionally, try clearing your browser cache and cookies and make sure you have third-party cookies enabled. You can also check whether you have the same problem on a different browser.

http://en.support.wordpress.com/third-party-cookies/If that doesn’t work, are you trying to change themes from Appearance ->Themes on your dashboard or are you trying to pick a theme directly form the main theme gallery here: http://wordpress.com/themes/ ?

hi, i’ve updated my browser, cleared my cache and cookies, checked my third party cookies – all ok, tried using Chrme too but still can’t change or activate any new theme. This is from wordpress.com i cant even find the appearance tab anymore so doing it directly from the main theme gallery – it’s still not working! any ideas?

If you can’t find the Appearance tab it’s usually because you don’t have the necessary permissions to make those changes. Only users with the administrator role can make changes to the appearance and theme. If you’re using more than one username on the blog, make sure you’re logged in under the exact same username that created the blog. If you’re not the person who created the blog, i.e. the blog owner, you won’t be able to make this change.

is there a way to find out the original administrator information as i have a feeling it may have been my old boss who no longer works here…!

I’m afraid staff won’t divulge that kind of information. Your best bet is to try and contact the owner/original admin and ask them to transfer ownership of the blog.
