@unkulsal-it may be that that particular theme doesn’t support subcategories in the blogroll.

No i have a friend using the same theme and he is able to get the sidebar to display subcategories ?
-
hello I just realized that I have to hit the link button in my widgets section, so all of my categories are working now. thanks

If this is you http://unklesal.wordpress.com/ I see your links appearing twice. Once as categories and again under Blogroll.
To make the “Blogroll” go away, you’re going to have to go uncheck “blogroll” from the categories in the links. I don’t think you can do it as a bulk edit, but unfortunately one-by-one.

OK-glad that worked out.
By the way, to help us help you, please link your username to your WordPress.COM blog. The sticky at the top of the forum “8 things to know” explains how.

@martyncooper, what is the address of your blog?
If you are hosted here at wordpress.COM, then you cannot use themes downloaded off of the internet. We are limited to the themes listed under appearance > themes. You can style the themes here at wordpress.COM with the paid CSS upgrade, but you need CSS experience because there is no official support for the CSS upgrade. WordPress has a the CSS preview which allows you to make CSS changes to see what effect they have without having to pay for the upgrade.
If your blog is not hosted here at wordpress.COM, then you are in the wrong forum and need to head over to http://wordpress.ORG/support/ .

Cheers,
