Changing theme and CSS
-
Hi: I wonder if someone could help me understand what, if anything, will happen to all of my content if I change my current WordPress theme to another WordPress theme. I’ve used Chateau for the past 2 1/2 years and have been customizing it. I’m just a bit concerned about the loss of content and/or everything getting messed up if I switch themes.
Thanks for the help!

You don’t lose your content for sure. But your site’s appearance might change depending on how your new theme works.

I would recommend removing your custom CSS if you switch themes – at least to start with. CSS is theme specific so what works in one theme is likely not to work in another and might even cause styling or layout problems that you wouldn’t expect.
Once you’ve switched themes if there are still bits and pieces you want to modify you can check the theme, see if your existing CSS will still work, and if not make the neccesary adjustments before saving your changes.
Remeber also that your CSS changes do have a nice history so you can always jump back to a previous version if you get stuck or break something important!

@marthaleone, when you switch themes, the WordPress.com software will automatically archive your existing CSS into the CSS Revisions so that it doesn’t possibly cause issues with your new theme. If you switch back to your old theme, you can reapply your previous CSS by going to Appearance > Customize > CSS and click on the CSS Revisions link at the upper right of that module.
