Changing Theme Header
-
Our blog is using the Twenty Ten theme. We uploaded our own header image (image #1) and it worked. During the holiday we uploaded and used a holiday-based header image (image #2). Now, we want to revert back to our original header image (image #1), which is still in the media section.
However, when configuring Appearance – Theme or Appearance – Header there is no option to specify a header image that has already been uploaded to the media section of the blog. We can choose a default image, no image, or upload a new image.
Is there a way to specify an existing image that is already located with the blog?

Not as far as I know, without the paid CSS upgrade. If you no longer have this on your computer you can upload it to a draft post, then copy it to your hard drive via the Preview, then re-upload it again.

What I did was get the link for the header image, put that in the URL of the browser, viewed the image, and saved it to the desktop. Then I uploaded that image as the new header (and then deleted the “old” header from the media library).
Not hard, but not necessary. You shouldn’t have to edit CSS for such a change. All WordPress needs to do is set an option to use an existing media library image for the header.

Since the header upload stuff is part of wordpress core, it has to be something that the core developers implement for the core wordpress package, so it just depends on if or when they would decide to do this.
I agree though it would be nice to select from past header images. Of course then what if someone changes from a theme with a tiny header to one with a larger header? The image is going to have to be enlarged and then cropped for the different theme, and that is going to greatly reduce quality which is going to irritate people. Still like to see it though.
