    hi there…

I’ve got a wordpress account and wanna change the theme!I upgraded my account so I can work with the css stuff…so I was looking for a theme and then put the code in this css thing (as you may notice, I just know a litte about blogging ;) )
but in my dashboard I have to chose one of the given themes and that’s why it isn’t changing the whole look of my page…

    please give me some advises…

How do you mean? If you go to Admin => Presentation and click on one of the templates there, it should change everything for you. IF you have already ‘edited’ your CSS, it would have been off the first stylesheet you were using and not the one you change to. Could you give a little more detail?

I happen to have a similar question. I downloaded a theme somewhere and want to use that theme. All the tutorials or faqs I read tell me to upload the theme files to my host web server. But I do not have such a server; my blog is hosted by wordpress.com. So what should I do? Or what is the domain name should I ftp to?

With wordpress.com you can’t actually upload any of those themes because they are designed to work with a different version of the wordpress software than what runs wordpress.com (wordpress 2.1 versus WordPress MU). The only way to get your site on wordpress.com to look like one of these themes is to have the staff upload it to the server (you can send in a feedback with the theme you would like) and if they see that there are many users that would like that theme, they may consider it for wordpress MU (wordpress.com).

If you know how to edit CSS, you could upload your own image files and edit the CSS to use the files and design that you would like, but it is a little work and requires the CSS upgrade.

Without knowing CSS properly, the easiest way is to use the themes that are available in the admin.

I am using the MistyLook theme and have paid via PayPal for an upgrade CSS option. The payment has not yet been accepted. Does this mean that I cannot edit the current theme until this happens?

What I would like to do with it is add an image for the body background. Where it says: “CSS Stylesheet Editor” there is some writing, and an option to “Start from scratch and just use this”. Do I upload an image then check the start from scratch option then put in the MistyLook style sheet with – background-image: url(“background.gif”); ?

You cannot edit the CSS until your payment has been processed.

Can you give us a link to the blog in question? Need to see it to answer visual questions.

    Same as itsjos.

Does that mean it will take a while before a new item will be added to the Presentation > CSS menu (something like “Upload Theme Files”) in order to upload files? Or there is another means of doing that?

    Thanks!

Same as Trent’s response to chenfuture. You can’t upload themes here at wp.com. The CSS upgrade is just for the editing of the CSS. Reading the thread that you post in is always recommended.

    Hi drmike!

Actually I read the whole thread, you can believe that. Perhaps as being a newbie at WordPress (and blogging) and not so well acquainted with the english language I couldn’t understand it at all. Sorry.

When I read trent’s message saying:

“If you know how to edit CSS, you could upload your own image files and edit the CSS to use the files and design that you would like, but it is a little work and requires the CSS upgrade.”

I understood that “upload your own image files” meant uploading the themes files.

What happens if I download a theme from a person that develops themes (and eventually sells them) and I want to use it in my WordPress blog?

By the way, the theme in question is Sadish Bala’s Paalam.

    Thanks!

That’s the image files are uploaded just like an image within a post and you can link to them within the css just like normal. The underlying php files that themes (ie open up a zip file for a theme and you’ll see them) are created with are not allowed to be uploaded as it would be a security risk.

Those themes are designed for wordpress, not wordpress.com. Regular wordpress is over at http://wordpress.org and requires a host. We’re running wordpress multiuser here, a different platform. Check out the Please read me first sticky for more details between the two softwares.

    hope this helps,
