Changing themes a drag for you?
-
I browsed the Zuki theme. And realized like some other themes, that I lusted, it would mean major work by me, to ensure a featured photo per blog post met the minimal size….which is a lot larger than my current set featured photos.
Anyone like me? Delaying on theme changing because thought of many hrs. more work just to change a theme so posts look aligned, same for photos….
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Couldn’t agree more. Of course if they put in some button to select “automatically resize/feature the first image in a post” some people would complain anyway.

Thx so much for responding, raincoaster. I just sit on my blogging butt on theme changing. After 4 years of blogging, I’ve only changed my theme 3 times. Pretty minor compared to other blogger fashionistas.
I’m just risk adverse or ….lazy. Maybe or I don’t know tricks.

I switched to Zuki (from Collective) over the weekend: http://writingthroughthefog.com It did require some image adjustments, mainly cropping many of my featured images into horizontal/header-type shots (they were bigger, and some square, which I felt looked odd and heavy at the tops of posts).
For the most part, though, I’ve used wide images, so re-uploading for size/quality was thankfully not an issue.
Other than that, it was a smooth theme change — was just a matter of planning out which posts to tag as “featured” for the front page slider, and what posts to highlight underneath.
There are many front-page options on Zuki, which is a bit overwhelming, so I decided to stick with just a few features (for now). Overall, I’m super happy with it. I hear you, though, about theme switches — sometimes it’s hard to gauge how long it will take to tweak everything the way you’d like.

I’m also looking to change to Zuki, but have been using Oxygen which has a featured image slider of 750×380. I’m nervous about changing too, as I don’t always have photos I could use of that size.
Having said that, I absolutely love the theme, and it’s a very good price for such a lovely theme, so I may have to just transition carefully and slowly, and put some effort in to getting a catalogue of photos I can use for my posts.

Thx for responding so far. I find it useful feedback. Any other responses appreciated too.

Hey guys, thanks for the info on this topic. I’m thinking of changing http://louisecusack.com from Chateau to Sundance, as I’m now writing in both epic fantasy and contemporary romance genres, and I really want to seperate them out for readers, and I think I can do that on Sundance. But I’m worried I won’t be able to achieve the look I want.
Is there any way to ‘trial’ a theme before you commit to it?
Cheers
Louise

Yes. You can use the “preview” link rather than the “activate” link.
The only themes we can use on WordPress.com blogs like your blog are licensed and adapted to run on our multiuser software the themes are found here http://wordpress.com/themes/
Themes are just “skins”. You can quickly and easily change themes on any WordPress.COM hosted blog to another one found here http://wordpress.com/themes/ and no data will be lost or negatively affected by the change. The only time you may have to do some work is if you are changing to a dramatically different theme and have done any CSS editing.
Provided you are logged in as Admin under the same username account that registered the blog go to Dashboard > Appearance > Themes, Browse themes until you find one you like and click either “preview” or “activate” or type in the name of the theme you want to use when it appears.
After you change your theme all you need to do is go here Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets > Inactive Widgets and re-install them where you want them to appear. The widget contents and settings will be the same as they were prior to changing themes.
Also be aware that WordPress.com sells bundles of upgrades. We can “preview” changes in the theme customizer that do not actually display on the blog unless we purchase the upgrade.
If you have not purchased the annually renewable custom design upgrade note that no changes you try out aside from those such as Custom Background, Custom Header, etc. which are stated on the theme description pages in the features column (right hand side) will be visible to visitors.

http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/custom-fonts/If you are using the “preview” mode for the Custom Design upgrade some of the settings in that mode will save but they won’t show up on the front end unless you purchase the upgrade.
To go back to the free options, go to Appearance → Themes → Customize → Colors and click the “exit the preview” link in yellow at the top of the panel on the right.

I’m going to close this thread as it is more useful to create a new thread rather than to drag up an old one.
Thanks!
