changing themes, then going back
-
Currently I use Modern News. I really like it. I was thinking of changing themes. But I’m sure someday I’ll go back to Modern News. Will I have to re-format it from scratch, or will WP “remember” my widgets and placement et. al.?

I don’t know if one can revert back to a premium theme or not because I’ve never bought one so I’ll tag this thread for a Staff response to that. What I do know follows.
You can quickly and easily change themes to another one found here http://wordpress.com/themes/ and no data will be lost or negatively affected by the change. The only time you may have to do some work is if you are changing to a dramatically different theme and have done any CSS editing.
Provided you are logged in as Admin under the same username account that registered the blog go to Dashboard > Appearance > Themes and browse themes until you find one you like and click “activate” or type in the name of the theme you want to use and
click the “activate” link when it appears. After you change your theme all you need to do is go here Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets > Inactive Widgets and re-install them where you want them to appear. The widget contents and settings will be the same as they were prior to changing themes.

When you change themes, your widgets will be saved but they probably won’t be in the same places as they were. If the themes are significantly different, they will be in the “inactive widgets” module. You can simply drag them back into place.

When changing from one free theme to another the answer is “yes”. I’m assuming that the same is true when a premium theme is involved but Staff will have to provide a definitive answer.

If you purchase a premium theme, it is yours as long as you have the same account and blog.

I’m just trying to know if I go to, say Theme 2012 for a day, then reactivate Modern News, will it look like it does not, all widgets in place, or will I have to manually replace the widgets?

Your widgets will be saved, but they won’t go back automatically to the same places they were. You’ll have to move them back into place as timethief described.
After you change your theme all you need to do is go here Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets > Inactive Widgets and re-install them where you want them to appear. The widget contents and settings will be the same as they were prior to changing themes.
