Changing thumbnail sizes | Oxygen | Recent Articles

    Hello all,

    If you look around my wordpress.com site thiswanderinglife.com (own domain, not self-hosted) you’ll see that I have successfully changed the width of the content. Huzzah!

    However, if you scroll to the recent articles part, you can see that my thumbnails look cut off: they are the theme’s standard size, and look only half as long as I would like them to be.

    I was able to change the CSS for the rest of the content (check this post out for example http://ourparisianlife.wordpress.com/2013/05/06/paris-in-color-young-turquoise-in-paris/) I really just went into the custom editor part through the dashboard.

    Can I change the automatic size of the thumbails for the recent articles section via CSS? I obviously don’t use FTP since mine is not self hosted. Reading other threads I have figured out that the Oxygen theme creates three different sizid images for featured images- I would just like to change one of them.

    Praises to all advice, helpful and otherwise.

    The image size can be changed, but since the original size is set in the theme php script files that means that you will be telling the browser to resize the image and browsers are (to say the least) lousy at resizing images. The images will become very fuzzy compared to how they are now. You can add this and see what it does to the images.

    .featured-image img {
        width: 100%;
    }

    It’s not a perfect fix as you mentioned, especially since my site showcases my photography, but it will work for now, since they are only three pictures- thanks @thesacredpath… You can see how it has blurred them a good deal, but I like the way it fixes the layout.

    Any other takers???? :-D

    The reason you cannot change the original size of the featured images is that they are hard coded into the theme. WordPress.com does not offer the option for you to change the underlying theme code because it’s a shared service and the themes are used by many others at the same time. CSS editing can adjust elements the theme code introduces, but it cannot change underlying function—and the size of featured images is one of those things. If you were to setup a WordPress.org install on a separate web hosting account away from WordPress.com, then you would be the only one using the theme you install yourself and you would have the ability to edit the underlying theme code and update the featured image sizes that way.
