Changing to a paid account

I wish to proceed to a paid account with a registered domain. Two questions:
1. I am changing to a paid account with a register domain. With this change, i want to customize the appearance of the blog–new colours, new format, new page and menu options. However, my archived content is an important part of the narrative. I fear that changing formats will render the archives unusable because of formatting etc. Is there a way to deal with that?
