    I’m not seeing any active upgrades or custom domain names associated with the account you are posting from. Could you have a second user account that is the owner of the site in question?

    But to answer your question, you cannot use a custom domain without a plan. You can, however, keep your domain registered here. It will even redirect to your WordPress.com site. It just will not show in the address bar, people will still see your yourgroovysite.wordpress.com style domain.
