Changing to your own Domain name via WordPress

    Hello!
I have just set up a WordPress domain (‘www.name.wordpress.com’) but I was thinking of paying the extra to upgrade it to ‘www.name.co.uk’. I don’t currently own the domain and I would follow the instructions on WordPress but when I do it does the old ‘www.name.wordpress.com’ stop working? I’ve used the link to it on social media posts and things so don’t really want to have to go back through them all if I can avoid it.
    Thanks :)

    Remove the www.

All www URLs on mapped domains like http://www.thesilicontropic.com redirect seamlessly to the same content under the URL without the redundant “www”. The software will continue to strip out the redunant and unnecessary www.

Be aware that www is an old protocol from way back when the web was new and everything was under separate server hardware. www (www.example.com) was the web server, mail (mail.example.com) was the mail server, ftp (ftp.example.com) was the FTP server, print (print.example.com) was the print server, etc.

These days, everything is run under the web server, making www. redundant and a waste of four characters.

Post the URL here please and I will type modlook into the sidebar tags on this thread for a Staff follow-up. No, it does not. http://www.name.wordpress.com will display the http://www.name.co.uk URL in the browser address bar.
