Changing URL

Can I change my URL/domain if I’m not on a paid plan? And what exactly will happen if I do so? (I’ve come across stuff about needing an upgrade etc.)
Also, I only want to remove the 21 in my domain – but “lifeandscience” on its own is already taken, but the blog hasn’t been used since February 2009. Is there any way I can have that domain? The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
I don’t believe WordPress will assist you with taking ownership over another person’s blog – even if it appears not to be in use.
You could try leaving a comment on their site here and seeing on the off chance that they get it.
You can also register a domain (unfortunately lifeandscience.com is taken, but others are available). You can learn how to register a domain with WordPress here. This option will cost money.

Hi there,
I understand how saddening it is to know that the URL you desire is already taken. But that’s how things work! You can’t have a domain name that is already registered unless it is available. It can’t be predicted after how long an unused domain name will be available.
You can change your blog address by following these instructions:
– Go to My Sites>Domains
– Click on your domain and then Edit Site Address
– Click on Change Blog Address
– Type the new domain name you wish to have.Refer this documentation:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/Note: Don’t forget to read the warnings. You won’t get your old domain name back. This can’t be reversed.
Can I change my URL/domain if I’m not on a paid plan?
With free plan you get a sub-domain, that is, your URL will always look like this xyz.wordpress.com. If you wish to remove ‘wordpress’ from your site and have a custom domain name (xyz.com) then it is mandatory to buy a paid plan.
Only Personal, Premium and Business plans offer the feature of having a custom domain.Hope this helps!
