    hi,

I plan to upgrade my site from free to personal and want to change the name of it, so the url would be different. I’ve checked and the domain name I want is available.
    my questions are:
    – should I change the name in the free site first, before upgrading? Or can I do that as part of the upgrade? I’m afraid if I have to do that, that it won’t redirect afterwards.
-either way, will the old site redirect automatically to the new one?
-and what happens to the other free sites I have currently all under the same account and login?
    thanks.

    Hi!

I feel like I’ve purchased enough sites and domains here I can answer your questions.

On your free site, if you are wanting that to be different before you get on a plan and purchase a custom domain, you will want to do that first as you cannot change the free site address during your upgrade to the Personal plan. After you have made that change, then you can go ahead and do your plan upgrade to the Personal plan. You can find all the intructions you need for making the address change here if you don’t already know how, and it gives you all the details you need to keep in mind before making your change: https://wordpress.com/support/changing-site-address/

Just to backtrack a little bit, if you were actually not wanting to change your free site address, then you just leave it as is, and proceed with upgrading to the Personal plan for that site.

During your upgrade to the Personal plan, you will choose the new available domain name you want. After you have paid for your plan upgrade to the Personal plan, and have chosen your custom domain, you will be upgraded to the Personal plan, and there will be a short waiting period for your new custom domain to settle in. The upgrade to the Personal plan is instant, and there is usually a short waiting period for the custom domain to kick in. That can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours. Once your new domain is set, your free site will automatically redirect to it, and that will become your new primary domain.

This page will give you all the info you need to upgrade to the Personal plan: https://wordpress.com/support/manage-purchases/upgrade-your-plan/

As for all of your other free sites, they will remain untouched and unchanged. All of your sites are housed under your account, but are all managed separately. So any change you make the site in question above will not affect your other sites.

    Good luck!
