changing url – will old url continue to also work
-
We currently have our WordPress site at https://straphaelspnf.wordpress.com. We’re in Australia and we’d like to change it to http://www.straphaelspnf.com.au, which we can buy elsewhere. We also want email addresses for our committee members so correspondence can be handed over people taking over their position along the way.
My questions are
1) do you see any issues, difficulties, considerations or have any advice on how to do this?
2) are some domain name registration services better than others for this?
3) will people still be able to find out domain using our old .wordpress.com address or is there a way we can ensure this?
4) do we also need to host the site differently?
5) do you limit how many email addresses and email traffic we can have on this site?
6) anything else we need to consider? The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
1) do you see any issues, difficulties, considerations or have any advice on how to do this?
You can add a custom domain name like straphaelspnf.com.au to your site from the Domains page — there’s no problem with that. :)
However, please note that custom domains at WordPress.com don’t have the “www” on them, so your site’s address will be http://straphaelspnf.com.au instead. If someone goes to http://www.straphaelspnf.com.au (with the “www”) they will be automatically redirected to the correct address, so you’re welcome to use either version on printed materials. The “www” just won’t appear in your browser’s address bar when you visit the site.
2) are some domain name registration services better than others for this?
The main consideration is that the domain registrar you choose must allow you to change your domain’s name servers to point your domain to WordPress.com. We have a guide to Map an Existing Domain that talks through that process. Otherwise, there’s no real difference from this end and you can use whichever domain registrar you choose.
3) will people still be able to find out domain using our old .wordpress.com address or is there a way we can ensure this?
Yes, they will! Anyone who visits your old .wordpress.com address will be automatically redirected to your custom domain.
4) do we also need to host the site differently?
No, there’s no need to making hosting changes if you’re happy with your site. If you add a custom domain to your site, the only change will be the address you and visitors see in the browser’s address bar when visiting your site. It won’t change any of the content or hosting for your WordPress.com site.
5) do you limit how many email addresses and email traffic we can have on this site?
WordPress.com provides an Email Forwarding service for up to five email addresses using your custom domain.
If you’d like more email addresses or full email service (not just email forwarding) you can Add Email from another email provider. In that case, there aren’t any limits from our end — your email service depends on the provider you choose.
6) anything else we need to consider?
I can’t think of anything else you haven’t already asked about, but if any other questions or concerns come up please let me know. :)
