Changing username

    My current username is ‘benford105’, however I would like to change it to ‘benpford’ – I tried changing it but it said the username is already in use. I remembered I had a very old second account with the username benpford, so I went in a deleted that account, thinking this would free up the username ‘benpford’.
    I am now still getting a message telling me the username has been taken and I still cannoy change it. Please advise me on the best way for me to get this username in place on my account.
