Changing Web hosting

Hi, I’m trying to switch from a website builder over to Word Press due to poor customer support over a technical issue. I purchased my domain name through the builder website and I somewhat understand how mapping the domain works, but what will happen once my subscription at the other site expires? Will I be able to re-purchase the domain through another web host site right away? I’m not an expert at websites and I’m really frustrated that it’s even come to switching host sites…any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
You can transfer your domain to a reliable domain hosting service, and then map the domain to WordPress.com. Namecheap, Hover, GoDaddy, etc. are some that come to mind. This way, you can keep renewing your domain at the new domain host, and renew the mapping at WordPress.com.

Thank you so much for the help. But you bring up one more question from me, and I’m sorry I’m such a noob. When transferring to a reliable domain host, will I be doing the transferring through the old website, or through the new host? I just want to make sure I know what I’m doing before I do it, and surprisingly googling it hasn’t been much help.

You have to initiate a transfer at the new host. For Namecheap, that page is here: https://www.namecheap.com/domains/transfer.aspx
For other hosts, you can usually find a prominent “Transfer” button on their homepages. Once you have initiated the transfer, you will get detailed instructions from the new host regarding the stuff you have to do at your old (current) host. The steps may be a bit challenging for first timers, but nothing a bit of poking around won’t solve. :)
The process takes about 2-3 days to complete. Once the domain is transferred to the new host, you can map it to WordPress.com with the instructions provided here:
