changing website using same domain

    We want to create our own website using our current domain name. My concern is switching the domain name over to WP. Does that make our current site void? We want to build this site before leaving the current site manager(that is being handled by a marketing company). Does this make sense? What happens to my old site when I switch domain managers?

    Hi artelpensacola,

    My concern is switching the domain name over to WP.

    You can start by creating a free site with us (with an address containing “.wordpress.com”), adding content, choosing a theme etc. When you are ready to switch the domain over to the new site here, it can be mapped or transferred.

    If you purchase a paid plan when creating the site, the domain credit can be left unused until you are ready to switch over.

    What happens to my old site when I switch domain managers?

    Some hosts assign a temporary domain but this process varies between hosts so I recommend speaking to them before you make any changes.

    You mentioned WordPress so I just wanted to highlight there are two types — WordPress.com and WordPress.org. We have some information about the differences between the two in this documentation. The information above only applies to WordPress.com sites :)
