Changing white around posts

Hello. I’m a novice, trying to set up a portfolio of plants for a local nature center. I’d like the space around my posts to be black versus the default white. I’ve googled ways to do this, but they involve going to appearance, customize, custom, additional css. The latter two tabs do not appear in my appearance/customize menu. Is that because I have a free theme? Or is there a line of html I can add to the “text” page of my posts to make the space around my posts black? Thanks you in advance, Noel

    hi,

“customize, custom, additional css. The latter two tabs do not appear in my appearance/customize menu. Is that because I have a free theme?”

CSS Customization is only available with the paid plans.

However, WordPress.com has so many themes, you will probably find another theme that you like without having to customize.
