changing wordpress themes

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi Folks–and THANKS!!! in advance for your help.
I have a website built on a wordpress template from oooo a lot of years ago–if I remember correctly maybe 2008? anyway it’s more than time for an update and I don’t want to pay the guy who built my last site–I think I can easily do it myself. Is there an easy way to port over? or do I need to start from scratch. I want to go with a fairly simple white look. If you have a recommendation of a simple site that would take my current type of structure easily that would be welcome. I will post some video on the new site and don’t intend to have reading portion which was so important to me in the current site.

again thanks for any and all help you can give. Miriam Feder

    Hi pdxgal,

Wow 2008! That was some time ago!

It looks like you have a self-hosted site using the WordPress.org version of WordPress. One of the more convenient design tools you’ll find in the newer versions of WordPress is the Customizer.
    https://codex.wordpress.org/Appearance_Customize_Screen

This allows you to preview different themes from within your site’s admin panel, without actually activating it. You can either upload your own theme to preview, or try out themes while browsing the WordPress.org repository.

This can give you an idea of what will – or will not – port over from your existing theme.

Once you have found one to your liking, you can start customizing certain features right away, even before saving and activating it. But I would not get too deep into customizing without saving.

I hope this helps, but you may want to try posting any other questions in the WordPress.org forums.

Have fun designing your new theme!
