Changing wordpress url under private domain

Hello, first of all I am working as an intern for an independent music artist and am trying to update her website. A previous intern made the artist’s wordpress account and then the artist’s private domain(through Godaddy) was pointed to the wordpress account.

The problem is that the previous intern made the wordpress account in her name, so when you hover over links on the artist’s site, you can see that name which my supervisor finds distracting.

    Example:
    the website is <artistname>.com
    the wordpress account is <internone>.wordpress.com
new wordpress account should be: <artistname>.wordpress.com

My supervisor would like me to change this, and I found the change URL option (my blogs->change blog address), but my supervisor is worried that when we change the url of the wordpress account, the godaddy website will not be pointing to the right place anymore and the website will mess up. It becomes trickier because Godaddy actually no longer hosts the site since it is linked to wordpress.

My question to y’all is this:
-Will it be ok to change the URL?
-If the website does mess up once I change the url, how can I fix it?

Thank you very much for the assistance and I hope I made everything clear enough.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Is bumping allowed here? My supervisor is really expecting results in the next day or two but I don’t want to tell her to change the wordpress url if it is going to mess up the website.

Right, and the URL of the blog in question is?
Without it we cannot even begin to help you so post it now.

We need to verify if you are actually referring to a WordPress>COM blog and not to a WordPress>ORG site so we can provide the correct answer.

Hi thanks and sorry for not linking them originally; my supervisor prefered me not to.

    current wordpress url: sarahtremmel.wordpress.com
    desired rename: ivwebb.wordpress.com
currently the doman “ivwebb.com” is pointed to “sarahtremmel.wordpress.com” which shows up when you hover over links/copy and paste links

    Several issues

You are forwarding and masking your domain name “ivwebb.com” – which is a sketchy way of doing things that hurt you in search results since search engines never see your site name “ivwebb.com” – and makes the site URL look fake as you are finding out with the sarahtremmel.wordpress.com –

You should Domain Map “ivwebb.com” to a blog here – that will then have a good address in the browser bar and over-right the address of the base WordPress.COM blog address. Timethief & I both use domain mapping for out sites – click on our names to see how domain mapping looks. Cost $ 13.- / year

As long as you have access to the Godaddy registration you can do the domain mapping easily since there is no domain mapping in place for ivwebb.com – the name can be mapped to any WordPress.COM blog here. But then you need to deal with the issue of duplicate content.

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

sarahtremmel.wordpress.com – is owned by whoever registered it and they are the only one that can change the domain name (but the name you want is not one you can change to – see below) – you should make nice with the intern and get them to transfer the blog to you

ivwebb.wordpress.com is reserved for the account ivwebb – if that is you or someone in your company the blog can be registered. But with domain mapping the WordPress.COM base blog name is not real important.

You can also register a new blog name that is close to ivwebb (ivwebbmusic?) – then Export the content from sarahtremmel.wordpress.com then import the content into the new blog – then do the domain mapping – then go back and set sarahtremmel.wordpress.com to “Private” to keep search engines out (DON’T DELETE THE BLOG – BAD JUJU will descend on you & your boss)

Then buy Site Redirect to send traffic from sarahtremmel.wordpress.com – to “ivwebb.com” – $ 13.- / year – should only need one year to teach search engines about the new address

    hope this helps a bit

PS – we needed the real names to make sure you were in the correct help forum and give you accurate advice

thank you so much for the advice, I’ll forward all of this to my boss and let them know. Thank you again for the very quick replies and helping me out tremendously–I wasn’t sure if I was going to mess up the website or not so I’m glad I asked first!

Hi, one last thing; is there any way to delete this thread? The party’s involved would appreciate if their names were removed from this thread for privacy concerns.
