ChaoticSoul sidebar problem

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,
I have faced a problem with my sidebar. It has gone to the bottom of the page.

All possible solutions did not help: displaying only one post per page, and then going through each post to see which one(s) is/are causing the problem; selecting “WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically”; cleared my cache; all images are the right size (no more than 480px).

The browser I am using is Firefox, on the IE it looks fine (IE is not my preference).

    Please help. Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    My url: silknotes.wordpress.com

Sorry, thought it would automatically display with my username.

I think you need to clear your FF cache and cookies and restart. The problem appears to be solved, so you’re likely looking at a cached version of the blog.

Thank you, raincoaster. I had done that, but nothing changed (also checked the updates for FF). The sidebar is still at the bottom of the page.

@silknotes, I’m using FF 3.0.10 on Mac and your site looks fine to me. I don’t have my PC laptop running so I can’t check with FF on Windows right now. Also, I went through your site in the W3C validator and do not see any of the typical things that cause these issues.

One thing to check is on the text widget at the top of your sidebar. I’m seeing the br tags as <br /> in the source code, and they should have a space between the “r” and the “/” like this <br />

Oops, the first example should have read “

  • Unknown's avatar

Well that didn’t work either. Without the angle brackets, br/ is what I’m seeing.

It looks fine in FF 3.0.8 with Windows.

    /nod to ella and a g’morning!

I’m wondering if this is another “unintended consequence” of FF upgrades. I’ll fire up my PC laptop which has FF 3.0.10 and take a look at the blog.

g’morning, tsp! I’ll be interested to know how it looks on your laptop. It’s not laziness that’s keeping me at 3.0.8….

  • Unknown's avatar

OK, it will take a little time since FF on my one laptop is still at 2.something so I’m upgrading to 3.

  • Unknown's avatar

OK, upgrade complete, and silknotes, your blog appears just fine in FF 3.0.10 on XP so I’m not sure what is going on with yours.

It is also fine for me in Safari 3 and IE8 on XP.

    Thanks tsp, ellaella.

I changed “br” to “br /”. Also upgraded FF (3.0.10 on XP).
Still the sidebar is at the bottom of the page. I am so confused.

I’m at a loss considering it is fine on my laptop with XP and FF 3.0.10.

Set your blog to display only one post per page (settings > reading) and then go through the posts using the “previous” button at the bottom of the blog and see if it is a particular post that is causing the issue.

Tried that, and with each post the sidebar is at the bottom.

OK, then let’s look in another direction. Have you recently added anything to your sidebar?

  • Unknown's avatar

After you made the change at settings > writing, did you open each post on the main page, make a minor change such as adding a space and then deleting it and then clicking the “update post” button? The change to the setting will not do anything until you actually open and edit the post and then update it.

  • Unknown's avatar

Nope, I didn’t add anything to the sidebar. The only thing that was changed there is the tag “br”. Also, since I had Cloud Categories, one of the category name became bigger in size. I am not sure if that could have been a cause, but I removed Cloud Category now and put just Categories widget. Still looks the same – sidebar at the bottom.

Yep, I did everything you advised. I went through almost all topics related to the sidebar problem, and did exactly as it was instructed: opened each post, added a space (or a word) and then deleted it, and updated the post.

Really appreciate your time with this bizarre issue. Thank you very much!

Well it seems to be isolated to your computer since we can’t see it and I’m out of ideas.
