The only chat widget allowed on wordpress.com blogs at this time is the meebo widget.
The code is obtained from going to the meebo website http://www.meebome.com/ and registering there. It’s 3 step process to create your sidebar widget and setup an account with them. After the 3rd step there will be a box to copy the code you need to put into your sidebar widget.
1. Log into your WP admin -> Appearance -> Widgets. Drag the Meebo Widget from the bottom Available widgets box and drop it into your Sidebar box.
2. In the top right hand corner of that widget is an edit button that brings up the editor for that widget where you will need to copy the code that you got from Step 3 at meebome.com
3. After you have pasted the code in just close the widget and click “Save Changes”. -
Hey guys, we can also use Google Talk and there’s another chat widget called Talkinator we can use, though not in the sidebar.

Thanks for posting that Jennifer. I guess one way would be to put them in a page, or possibly in a sticky post.

The Google Talk code can be put in a text widget in the sidebar, but the Talkinator really needs to be in a Page or a Post.
