Chat/Instant Message box to my site?

  Is there a way I can get a widget or be able to add a chat-box/shout-box or instant message board to my site? I’ve heard that Chatroll is good. But I don’t know how to apply any to my site. Either to a post or page. Nothing works! Does WordPress not let you add this item to your site for some reason? Or do I have to do something complicated to get one to work? (I don’t even know which out of the hundreds of download sites to use as a message box anyway..)
