Child Categories appending parent category name

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I just created a blog, and I added my first post. Which is filed under 3 categories: Dharma, Sanskrit and Shloka. Now, Dharma is the parent category of Sanskrit, and Sanskrit is the parent category of Shloka. Now, after publishing the post, I noticed that when I hover my mouse over the category “Sanskrit” at the bottom of the post, the link shown in the tool tip is “http://en.wordpress.com/tag/sanskrit-dharma/”. Similarly for Shloka I get “http://en.wordpress.com/tag/shloka-sanskrit-dharma-dharma/”. So, it seems like the child category appends all the parent category names to it when providing the link. I am not sure if this is expected behavior, since I was expecting to see just the name of the category irrespective of the fact that it might be a child category.

Hopefully someone will shed some light on this.

    Thanks!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I thought my username will automatically link to my blog in case someone wants to see exactly what I have described, but looks like it doesn’t (at least to me).

    So, here goes: http://brahmgyan.wordpress.com/

To make things more interesting, I added the category cloud widget, and links on mouse hover are as follows:

    Sanskrit: http://brahmgyan.wordpress.com/category/dharma/sanskrit-dharma/

    Shloka: http://brahmgyan.wordpress.com/category/dharma/sanskrit-dharma/shloka-sanskrit-dharma-dharma/

The category link under category Dharma shows up as expected (http://brahmgyan.wordpress.com/category/dharma/) since it has no parent category.

The links here are consistent with the links I see in the address bar when I click on any category in my category list drop down.

Again, I am not sure if the appending thing done here, as described in my first post in this thread, is expected.

    Thanks!

This may be confusing to new users, but what you are describing is the difference between global and local tags and categories and that is how wordpress.com works. Nothing wrong or odd here.

The tags/categories next to your post all link to the global tags where all posts on wordpress.com with that same tag are collected and displayed

The tags/categories in your tags/categories widgets in your sidebar all link to the local tags and categories, where all where all posts on your blog with that same tag or in the same category are collected and displayed.

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/global-tags/

To make your username link to your website you must enter a website in your profile. It’s not automatic, since the same user can have many blogs, and it’s up to the user to select which website the user wants to display.

Thanks for the quick reply. The website linking now works.

I understand the difference between global and local tags, and the behavior that I mentioned is not related to global-local tags. Moreover the tags are fine. The issue is only with the child categories

My issue is that if you look at the tags or the category names in the URL (post 1 and 3 in this thread), all child categories get the parent category names appended to them. For e.g.: Sanskrit becomes Sanskrit-Dharma, Shloka becomes shloka-sanskrit-dharma-dharma. Intuitively, this doesn’t seem right.

If you look at this blog: “http://omnigens.wordpress.com/2009/08/31/000007/”, the blogger has a child category “Peer Learning” under a parent category “Learning”. So, when you hover the mouse over the category list under the post, the URL shows as: “http://en.wordpress.com/tag/peer-learning/”. Notice that there is no appending of the parent category name as it has happened in my blog. Similarly, if you look at the link under the category list for this same blog, the category Peer Learning will show the URL as “http://omnigens.wordpress.com/category/learning/peer-learning/”. Again notice that there is absolutely no sort of appending of the parent category name as it has happened in my blog.

Hopefully this comparison with a different blog clarifies the original issue.

    Thanks!

@maharathi: Categories should be the general subgroups of your posts, while tags (optional) should be more specific keywords related to the content of a particular post. But categories and tags are the same thing actually, and they function in exactly the same way, so there’s no point in adding the same word or phrase as both a category and a tag.

This is a mistake by itself, and you should correct it anyway. It may also be related to your permalink issue. So I suggest you start by deleting all your tags and all your categories, then adding each one again as either a category or a tag. After you do that, let us know if the permalinks turned up ok or not.

@panaghiotisadam Thanks for the pointer. I did as you suggested, and now the child categories don’t get their parent category names appended to them.

You’re welcome. I’m glad this was resolved, because it was an unusual issue: as you saw above, I was only guessing here.
