childs theme
-
Having looked at ‘the missing manual’ for wordpress, I thought I would be able to build a child’s theme which would act like a back up so that when the theme (studio theme in my case) is updated by wordpress the childs theme can reinstate the changes I have made.
It seems that WordPress.com hosted sites are not allowed FTP access, also they are not allowed plugins. This prevents users creating a child’s theme. Can you tell me why this is and how to solve the problem?

Hi,
You can’t create child themes here at WordPress.com. Themes work a little bit different here at WordPress.com vs. self-hosted in the sense that some of the things you need to worry about in self-hosted WordPress.org sites (such as child themes) are already taken care of for you behind the scenes by WordPress.com.
Whenever your theme gets updated (which you don’t have to do manually as well, this is also taken care of for you behind the scenes), the changes that you made won’t be affected.
For more info about the differences between .com and .org, see here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
Hope that clears it up!
