Chinese pinyin displayed incorrectly in posted articles

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I have been posting Chinese language instruction articles to by blog side http://www.teachmechinese.wordpress.com for years. The Chinese characters and the pinyin phonetic marks displayed fine before. Sometime ago (perhaps a year ago?) I noticed that the third mark (which is a ^) started showing up in a separate character space instead of on top of the vowel it is supposed to modify. The pinyin marks display correctly in the Edit screen under ‘Visual’. However, what you see there is not what you get after posting the article for my readers. Please help. Thank you.

When we need Staff help with issues Volunteers cannot resolve like this one we type modlook into the sidebar tags on our forum threads. I did that for you. How do I get a Moderator/Staff reply for my question? https://en.support.wordpress.com/getting-help-in-the-forums/#how-do-i-get-a-moderatorstaff-reply-for-my-question

Thank you so much for adding modlook for me. I look forward to receiving a reply from a moderator/staff. Have a wonderful week!

Hi @likeabridge, can you point me to a page or post where this is happening and perhaps give me the Chinese character or string of text, and I can take a look at things.

Also, just as a test, can you look at your site in a different browser to see if it shows the same thing?

    Hi,

    Thank you for your reply.

Please go to this page and look at the pinyin with third tone:

    https://teachmechinese.wordpress.com/

For example, the first line of the second paragraph should read like:
The Chinese word for fruits in general is 果实 (guǒshí).

Please compare it with what is displayed on the WordPress page. The pinyin mark for the third tone is displayed in a separate character space instead of over the “o”.

    I am using Google Chrome.

Interesting – The pinyin displays correctly with Internet Explorer.

Is there a setting in Google Chrome that people can change to correct this problem?

    Regards,
    Lydia Lin

  • Hi Lydia,

It displays correctly for me in Chrome. See the screen shots at the link below, taken in Firefox, Chrome and Safari, in that order.

I also checked Chrome on Android, and it displays correctly there as well.

So this is most likely a setting in Chrome, or perhaps a system setting in Windows that only affects Chrome. I have no idea where to go looking for this, though :)

Perhaps check if changing your site font at My Site ->Customize ->Fonts make any difference, or else changing the font settings in Chrome itself.

    Hello,

    Thank you for your reply.

That is interesting that the pinyin tone marks display correctly for you in Chrome.
I tried viewing the blog site on my iPad, and it displays the tone marks correctly.

Curiously, my other Chinese instruction blog site on WordPress.com (for the younger set) displays the pinyin correctly in Chrome. Please view the May 9 blog at:

    https://sweetieandbobo.wordpress.com/

牡丹花 (mǔdan huā) are tree peony blossoms

I have not posted to that blog site for a few years.

The teachmechinese.wordpress.com site displayed pinyin correctly for many years. Sometime in the last year or so, it suddenly changed, and it affected all the old articles as well. Possibly the default theme font was changed by the theme provider.

I just changed the font to Libre Baskerville at My Site ->Customize ->Fonts. That did the trick! Thank you very much for helping me out.

    Regards,
    Lydia Lin
