Choice of free site

I saw ‘Edda’ listed somewhere as a free template. I wanted to choose it.

But when I started to create my site, I was only able to choose from about a dozen templates, and Edda wasn’t one of them.

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

To themagicrobot: Thanks for your reply! I’ve been able to edit the first page of the Edda template, and publish it, although for now it’s still giving me “Coming soon” when I try to access it from another computer.

The Edda template has five buttons (I’ve deleted one, so now there are four), and it also has a Menu option in the top righthand corner (for now it only has one option). I would like the reader to be able to access any one of four independent parallel blogs, using either the buttons or the Menu. I have looked around, but I don’t see how to do this. Can anyone give me pointers on how to proceed?

How can I link each button with a separate blog page? Or, how can I link a Menu option with a separate blog page? I noticed that you can access an “anchor” on a separate page, but I have no idea how to set this up.

Concerning my question of how to link Menu options to a separate blog page, I was able to figure this out for myself, and used various WordPress features to create a working webpage. If you read this now, you can ignore the questions above, thanks.

There are two surprising behaviours though. First of all, I put a password on the Home page and on each of my four blog pages. It works fine, except that if the outside user enters the password, and specifies that the password should NOT be remembered, the next time the page is accessed the access is permitted WITHOUT a password. It’s as if cookies were being used. I tested this on outside computers and with four or five different browsers. Further, the page seen by outside users does not have an EDIT button, which is correct, but it does have the word PROTECTED added to every page title. In short, the system annoyingly displays in the title the fact that each page is protected, but also, it annoying fails to provide complete protection!

The second surprising behaviour is that I can’t reorder the items in the menu list. I found a place where there is a re-ordering button, I did the re-ordering, and I saved the changes, but they don’t seem to take. The system continues to use the original order it had chosen itself. Not a big deal.

  • Hi @untutoredcomments,

To rearrange your menu links, or add new links, you’ll need to set a primary menu by going to Appearance → Customize → Menus → Primary, as shown here:

    Here’s how: https://wordpress.com/support/menus/

With regards to password-protecting your pages/posts, once a user has entered a password to view the content, this will be stored in their browsing session. If you were to test this in a private/incognito browser window, you’ll find that the session is not stored when closing/opening new private windows.

All pages/posts that are password-protected will have Protected: appended to the titles.

If you are looking to password-protect your entire site (which removes Protected: from the titles), you can set your site to private by going to Settings → General, as outlined here: https://wordpress.com/support/settings/privacy-settings/

    Hope that helps!

Hi metabreakr, it looks to me as if you have given me solutions to all my problems, thanks!

I will have to study these suggestions a little later, and do what’s necessary. When I’m done I’ll add a short post to let you know. Thanks again.

Hello again metabreakr. Some of the viewers are minors, and I don’t want to oblige them to sign up for an account, so I’ve stuck with the password approach.

The menu is perfect now. Thanks again for your quick reply.
