If you are trying to create the Gallery widget from the Customizer, use the widget from Dashboard>Appearance>Widgets instead.
There have been earlier reports of problems in creating this widget via the Customizer.

Hi Malin, it looks like you were able to add those images to your gallery widget. Is there anything more I can do to help with that?
@justjennifer – Thanks for pointing out the issue with the gallery widget in the Customizer. Our developers are aware of the issue but don’t have a fix for it yet, so I’ll keep an eye on their progress with that.

Welcome, Rachel. Seems the Customizer is problematic for widget visibility as well. (Referencing an earlier forum thread, which of course I don’t have time to look for now.)
-
Oof! I missed that issue — thanks for pointing it out, too. I let our developers know the widget visibility isn’t working in the Customizer, either. I really appreciate the heads up. :)

Hi Jen, the developers fixed up the issue with widget visibility in the Customizer. If you run into any more trouble with that please let me know.
They are still working on the “Choose Images” button in the gallery widget — we’ll let you know once that’s sorted out.

Thanks for all answers. I found that I could change/choose pics in ordinary Dashboard>Appearance>Widgets, but glad to hear that it´s a known issue that choose image button in costumizer doesn’t work.
