Choosing image for publicizing
-
Hi! Is there a way to chose which picture is displayed when the link is posted to Facebook, twitter, etc. when you publicize it? Sometimes it puts up a picture from the middle of the recipe instead of the finished product and to draw people to the site, I feel like a finished product picture would be better. Thanks!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
Facebook should show an image in the post itself, or your Blavatar or Gravatar. You can try uploading larger images to your posts as Facebook ignores images under 200×200). You can also try setting a Featured Image. Facebook should look for a Featured Image first, but sometimes it doesn’t: Featured Images
To check which image Facebook is pulling for a given post, you can look up the post’s URL in their debugger here:
https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug
As for Twitter, the feature that displays images with your tweets is called Twitter Cards. Twitter has approved Twitter Cards for all blogs with addresses ending in “.wordpress.com”. But, since you have a custom domain on your blog, you’ll need to request validation from Twitter for this:
You can click on “validate your meta tags” at that link or go directly to here to do it.
On the Card Validator page, on the left, click the “Validate & Apply” tab. You can enter your domain name there to request approval from Twitter.
Please let me know if you have any questions!

Hi! What I am trying to figure out is which image is posted with each individual post I publicize to Facebook while publishing my post on my blog. Each blog post seems to be different with which image shows up and I am trying to find out if I can pick which one will show on my Facebook page. If I just link myself on fb to my blog then my blavatar shows (but now that I think about it, it shows my old one so not sure how I can fix that!).
Not to concerned about twitter, but I have validated the site already :O)

Hi there,
Unfortunately, we have no control over the images that Facebook chooses to include. Basically, we just send them the URL, and they search through that for the excerpt and images to include.
Your posts include image tags, and it’s up to Facebook to use these images or not.
However, our developers are aware of this issue. We are looking into it to determine if there is anything we can change on our end to get this changed.
I’m so sorry I couldn’t be of more help.

No problem. It’s just kind of an ugly post on the FB page when they use a middle of the recipe picture instead of the final nice looking product!
-
Hi there,
It’s definitely been a hot topic in the forums for some time now. We’re looking into it and we’ll post it if a solution can be made!
Thank you!
-
Awesome, thanks! It’s not a huge deal but it sure would be nice if we could somehow “tag” the image we want used.
-
Ok, so just now when I published a post the image it took to put on Facebook wasn’t even from my post!! I had to quickly go to Facebook and delete because it was the totally wrong recipe image!
-
Hi there,
I’m sorry that this happened! I checked your Facebook post and the first one I see is the Pesto Nut Bake which is also the last post on your blog. Has the issue been resolved?
Thank you!
-
No. It hasn’t. I quickly went to FB and deleted the post because it used a picture from the wrong recipe! I then uploaded the correct pic and linked to my blog straight from FB, but I don’t want to do this every time since that’s what publicize is for! I didn’t have that picture in my blog post at all so I don’t understand why it did this.

Hi there,
That does seem strange. Normally we just send Facebook the URL, and they search through that for the excerpt and images to include. I haven’t heard of them pulling an image that wasn’t even in the post. Next time that happens, can you please take a screenshot and upload it in your Media Library? I’d like to look into that further and see what’s going on!
Thanks for your patience. Hopefully we’ll be able to sort this out, and so sorry for the inconvenience!

Luckily I am quick at looking to see what posts. I am posting a pic in my media file on how it looked today when I published and publicized. Only half a pic! Then I deleted it and shared to FB directly from the blog post and it didn’t even give me that pic as a thumbnail option. Hopefully we can just figure out a way soon for us to indicate the favorite picture to use for publicizing…

Hi there,
It looks like the image that was posted to Facebook is the first image in the post and not from another post as seen in the screenshot below:
The images that Facebook pulls are from the post itself and that’s what is currently happening. Facebook determines which images to pull. As for only showing half of the image, it would be best to contact Facebook about that. I’m not quite sure what is going on and they might be better able to explain.
-
Hi there, the image that I just put in my media was from my post, but I was showing you how it only showed half of my image instead of the whole image. I will ask Facebook about that. The last post I did, it pulled an image from a different post and I will screen shot it if it happens again to show you.
-
Sounds good! Yes, if Facebook is pulling images from entirely different posts, please let me know!
-
It happened again where my post on Facebook had a picture with a giant gray line. This is getting frustrating. Do you guys have any suggestions on how to fix this? I have uploaded the screen shot of the post to my media library.
-
Hi there,
Thanks for the screenshot. I’m actually not sure why the grey line is appearing as we just send Facebook the images and Facebook chooses from that point on. Can you please contact Facebook and see what’s going on? The images on our end seem to loading just fine.
Please let me know what they say!
I’m sorry for the inconvenience!

It happened again today. I am getting so frustrated. Is there any benefit to publicizing from the blog when I publish each post or does it have the same affect if I just go to my FB page and upload a pic and post that way?
-
Hi there,
You can try running your URLs through the Facebook debug tool to make sure they are seeing the latest version of your site and using the correct images:
https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug
I ran it for the post: http://veggiesdontbite.com/2013/12/23/melomakarouna-the-greek-christmas-cookie/ and found that Facebook said:
“Provided og:image is not big enough. Please use an image that’s at least 200×200 px. Image ‘http://veggiesdontbite.files.wordpress.com/2013/12/melomakarouna-greek-christmas-cookies-3.jpg’ will be used instead.”
Try that and see if that fixes the grey line.
Cheers!

But they are the ones that pic the image!! The ones with the grey lines are the images that they pic from my blog post, which are not the images I even want. I really hope that wordpress can come up with a way soon for us to flag a photo so that it can be the one used in blog posts for publicizing…
So, is it better to publicize through my blog post or just as good to go to Facebook after I have published and upload my post there (i.e not through my blog)??
Thanks and happy holidays!
